The Blue Zones - 9 Lessons for Living Longer

Recently Parini was in Los Vegas for Architecture related conference from work. In the conference one of the speakers recommended to read a book called “The Blue Zones”.  Parini ordered this book for me and I got it last week.  Once I started reading this 300 some page book, I liked it, and finished in a day’s time.

The book is written by Dan Buettner, a national geographic explorer, who gathered top scientists in the world to study the communities living in the so-called Blue Zones.  The team analyzed cultures where people live healthy, disease free long lives (into their 90’s and even 100’s).  The study focused on the common elements of lifestyle, diet and outlook toward life.

The book identifies 5 Blue Zones in the world where large proportion of people are centenarians.

1) Sardinia, Italy,
2) Okinawa, Japan,
3) Loma Linda, Calif., USA,
4) Nicoya, Cost Rica, and
5) Ikaria, Greece

Based on team’s findings, after interviewing centenarians in these 5 Blue Zones, the author summarizes the secrets of long, fulfilling and disease fee lives of these people and the 9 lessons learned.

The last chapter in the book says - we are not going to live in these 5 Blue Zones communities, but each one of us can create our own personal Blue Zone. The book recommends 9 strategies (with 41 tactics).

My personal goal is to live a long, healthy and fulfilling life. I studied these 9 strategies to assess where I stand and how I need to change to replicate Blue Zone’s lessons in my life.

Many of you may never get a chance to read this book (and if you do, I am sorry that I am revealing the lessons learned and the takeaways.  However, if you end up reading the book, you will find it an interesting read).

Over the next 9 days I will be sharing 9 Blue Zone strategies and their tactics.  I hope you may find this valuable, if not now, at some time in future.

Thank you.
